Why your wig never sits flat — 5 causes and fixes
You know the feeling. The unit looked perfect in the vendor’s video. But on your head there’s a bubble at the crown, the sides don’t hug, and by 4 p.m. the whole thing has quietly crept backwards. You’ve started carrying a mirror around like it’s a part-time job.
A wig that doesn’t sit flat is almost never “your head being shaped funny.” It’s one of these five things — and every one of them has a fix.
1. The cap was never your size
Most ready-made wigs are built on an “average” cap and adjusted with a strap. But heads are not average — circumference, nape depth and ear-to-ear distance all vary far more than vendors admit. If the cap is too big, no amount of strap-tightening stops the shifting; too small, and it perches instead of sitting.
The fix: measure. A properly fitted unit starts from your numbers — that’s why our custom units are built on your exact measurements, and why our ready-to-wear pieces are customised before dispatch.
2. Too much hair underneath
Chunky cornrows or a thick bun under the cap create hills the wig has to climb. The flatter the base, the flatter the wig.
The fix: small, flat cornrows going straight back, or a wrapped low style under a wig cap. If braids are fresh and chunky, give them a few days to soften before judging a unit’s fit.
3. The density is fighting you
Very high density looks luscious on a mannequin, but an overloaded cap is heavy — and heavy wigs slide. If your unit feels like a helmet, the weight itself is part of why it won’t stay put.
The fix: choose density for your face and lifestyle, not for the camera. A well-chosen 150–180% often looks fuller on than a 250% that never settles.
4. Worn-out or missing structure
Elastic bands stretch. Combs bend and snap. Lace loses its shape after months of tension. A unit that used to sit right and no longer does hasn’t become the wrong size — it’s just tired.
The fix: this is revamp territory: band replacement, fresh combs, re-laid lace. It costs a fraction of a new unit and takes years off the one you own. Here’s how to know if yours is worth reviving.
5. It was never customised to a real head
Straight-from-the-bag wigs — untweezed, unplucked, hairline untouched — sit like a hat because nothing about them has met a human head yet. Customisation isn’t decoration; it’s what turns hair into your hair.
